Finding ways to reuse and re-style key pieces in your wardrobe is the secret to a versatile and long-lasting collection of mix and match pieces for a girl-on-the-go’s dream closet. After all the last thing a busy girl with a day job, a passion project and/or friends, family, social life and down time needs is super complicated outfit options. One of our favorite ways, whether it’s fall or spring, to style a versatile outfit is by incorporating a flowy maxi skirt! Maxi skirts are not only SUPER COMFY but are incredibly versatile, easily taking the girl on the go from day to night or casual to dressy if a few easy switch ups that you probably already have in your closet!

The key to styling a maxi skirt casually is to not take your self too seriously and to balance out a floor length skirt with more casual pieces. I have worn this maxi skirt from day to night so many times and in so many variations. For this casual sunday brunch with Mel I threw on this double slit maxi skirt from Forever 21 with casual low heel tom petty booties from Sam Edelman. The laid back style of the suede and kicked back bootie feel make the maxi skirt feel less ball room and more casual cool. To take your maxi skirt from day to night layer a lace crop top under a cable knit sweater or open weave top like I did here. Attention to details can make all the difference in dressing your maxi skirt down for daytime, like choosing more casual knits or even pairing with pieces that are associated with casual dressing in general like a beanie, jean jacket or cross body bag.

Since a maxi skirt already has a dressier feel, it doesn’t take much effort in taking your maxi skirt from day to night with a few quick changes. The easiest way is to just switch your low booties or sport kicks for a heel. With the double side slits on this skirt, it  immediately highlights a cage heel with amps up the dressy, sexy vibe. Pairing a flowy maxi skirt back to a fitted crop top will also accentuate your waist and definitely take the look up a notch. For this transition from day to night, I actually went with a crop top in lace and skipped the fitted part. The lace was the perfect romantic element for a night on the town while still remaining incredibly comfortable!

The key to taking your maxi skirt from day to night is to remember not to over think it and focus on comfort! After all, wearing a maxi skirt is like wearing your pjs but way cuter and way more put together!

Such a great look! I’ve never been into the maxi skirt trend. I guess I’m scared of getting the skirt wrapped around my shoe and falling down a staircase 🙂
But I really like how you show how to dress it down for day and up for night. I would not believe this skirt was from f21. You did a good job at making it look more expensive 🙂
I’m going to look for a skirt like this next time I go, and try to get over my fear of falling.
