I’ve been thinking a lot lately about buying a new classic handbag that is timeless and will hopefully last forever (even if it doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg). I have my Louis Vuitton ‘carry all’ tote that I bought about 8 years ago now, which is kinda crazy to think about.. ANYWAYS, I have already broken a strap once on this bag, because I carry about as much stuff as I can possibly fit into. There’s a great leather and shoe repair place here in Austin that fixed it right up for me and reinforced the other three straps, but it made me realize that this LV tote is really my work horse and pretty tired one at that.
I once heard with nice shoes that you should rotate them so as to give them a rest and make them last as long as possible. This got me thinking that I should probably be doing the same with my bags. Now just because you want this bag to last forever, doesn’t mean you have to spend a bajillion dollars on it, or even two months rent (this is crazy to think I’ve actually seriously contemplated this and thankfully talked myself off the ledge). Buy the bag that right for you in YOUR budget and don’t feel pressured to spend more than you want or can. This I think is super important because no one wants to end up regretting or resenting something that they spend a pretty good chunk of change on. To illustrate this point, I would love to get a black leather chain strap Saint Laurent bag, but it’s not in my budget to be quite honest! BUT, in college I picked up a super simple small smooth leather chain strap bag from Forever 21 for probably less than $30, and not only do I still use it today but it’s in pretty good shape. This goes to prove that you can get a bag you will use forever and often, and you don’t have to loosen your purse strings too much!
As I continue to contemplate my next forever bag, the most important things I’ll think about is:
1. Will I get tired of this in the next year?
2. How often will I use it?
3.Why wouldn’t I wear this?
(if you can come up with multiple scenarios in which you wouldn’t carry this bag, whether it be season, color combos or anything, DON’T BUY IT. No matter how much you like it now, or think you want it. You won’t use it even though you lied to yourself in question 2 and said “Yes, I’ll definitely use it!”)
4. Will I feel happy, confident and have everything I NEEEED to carry with me 24/7 when I wear it?
Maybe next time, I’ll debate whether to buy used or new…until next time!
