SXSW 2015 It Bag: ESPEROS

Yesterday Melissa and I explored our favorite places around Austin on our @seekwandershare Instagram with an amazing local brand that we’ve come to know and love over the past few weeks. As a real Austinite, born and bred, I am always looking for brands and products that are local. I feel so much more connected to the community when I am in tuned with local businesses and people in Austin who have an entrepreneurial spirit like us. It began with a chance meeting, but now that we’ve spent the past few weeks and the entire day yesterday bonding all over Austin together, I can happily tell you my ESPEROS backpack and I are now old friends.

For us, finding the right “it” bag for SXSW 2015 wasn’t just about function, although that did play a huge part. The ESPEROS backpack is made of military grade canvas and has a super simple and straightforward design, making it perfect for those who will be frequenting the interactive or music portion of SXSW. Melissa and I packed ours full for yesterday’s Instagram excursion with a laptop, ipad, notebooks, water, snacks and a knit blanket, so I can assure you that it passes the functionality test as our SXSW 2015 “it” bag. But it really wasn’t all about the functionality when we decided on the “it” bag for SXSW 2015; we also wanted to find a bag that would resonate with local Austinites, both in style and in soul. And ESPEROS has soul.

It all started when their founder, Oliver Shuttlesworth, travelled to Central America and witnessed first hand the effects that extreme poverty and lack of education have on children in the developing world. Like most of us would, he wanted to find a way to make a meaningful impact on behalf of the more than 75 million children who lack access to an education. His solution: ESPEROS. For every bag or backpack sold, ESPEROS helps fund one year of education for a child in the developing world.

So you can see why ESPEROS, meaning to carry hope, means more to us than just a great locally designed Austin backpack that carries all the things we “need” for SXSW 2015.  As we carry our ESPEROS backpack everywhere we go, we not only carry hope for our own future, but also for the futures of children around the world.
