When I graduated from college and found out that I had my first real job, I was so excited. This was the new page of a completely new chapter for me. I wasn’t nervous about what how I would perform and how I would fit in, but I had no idea what I would wear. This may seem silly, but I take great pride in being appropriately dressed for almost all occasions (except the grocery store), and was unsure what really defined business casual. I’m lucky enough to work for a tech start-up which is a fairly casual environment.
Always err on the side of over dressed versus underdressed. You never know who you will meet, which meeting you will get pulled into or what visitors may be in your building. Once you get into a routine and are familiar with your office, the attire and your schedule you can begin to better predict what you’ll need to wear and which days will be better for dressier or more casual looks. My typical go to work outfit is either a dark wash jeans and a loose silky blouse paired with heels or for a more casual look a knit tee with skinny jeans, flats and a third completer piece. If I’m going to wear knits, which is inherently more casual, I always incorporate a third piece like a jacket, scarf or statement jewelry piece. This keeps the whole look balanced and still conveys a put together thoughtfulness. Keep in mind, your job and job duties will dictate a lot of what to wear, for instance, Melissa is client facing and has to be ready to make a professional impression at any given time, whereas I hardly ever interact with clients directly and my office as whole is much more casual than hers. So ultimately, keep in mind what’s right for you in your work space and take cues from your co-workers as you start your new role!
