If you had asked me before putting together this post if I was a makeup girl, I probably would have said “not really”. Don’t get me wrong, I love to feel beautiful but I grew up riding horses and coming home smelly with dirt under my nails and in my hair and didn’t really discover fashion and makeup until I was 14! Kind of late to the game I know. My mother was never big on makeup either so most everything I learned was from magazines, movies and friends (don’t worry mom, I learned so much more from you and it’s much more important stuff! like how to pick a great horse!).
Back to my makeup bag, after making this post though, I realized I love to play with makeup. I’ll admit, I have sensitive skin so to have a full face of makeup for 12+ hours is hard on my face, so I’m not one you’ll see with a full face of makeup all the time. I think that why I have so many amazing beauty products in my bag because they all serve different purposes! Day to-day I keep my face makeup pretty simple and sheer with either applying Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer all over or just using Bare Minerals concealer in well rested to cover spots and my under eyes. Sometimes for a special occasion, or if I’m needing slightly more coverage overall I’ll use my YSL Touche E’clat foundation; it’s incredibly light, smells amazing, makes my skin look luminescent but also gives me that little extra coverage I might need.
If I’m feeling like a zombie or just need more under eye coverage (and sleep) I’ll amp my brightness overall with my Laura Mercier secret camouflage under eye concealer in color 1. I have pretty fair skin, but the thing I love most about this cream concealer is that it blends beautifully and has a very light, pinky almost peach undertone which combats the darkness so well. I’ll apply it all the way from my under eye to where my nostril is and back up in an angle to the outer corner of my eye and sometimes out to my hair-line from there to give me a really awake and contoured look. I started using this under concealer at the beginning of college (which was too long ago) and have been using it ever since. Trust me girls, if it can get me through some of those rough mornings recovering from those all night long parties, this concealer can do anything (dad, I mean all night long study sessions).
My go to blush is hands down Bare Minerals all over face color in True. Guys, I can’t tell you enough how amazing this blush is. It has gold, pink, berry and red flakes all mixed together which makes it perfect for brightening the apples of your cheeks, lightly swiping across your cheek for a light blush color but if you add a few more brush strokes right under you cheek bone and blend towards your hairline you have the EASIEST and fastest cheek contour. When I wear this blush, I always get compliments on my cheek bones and I swear it’s the fact that this blush is a highlighter, blush and contour color all in one. This is also an oldie but goodie that a friend showed me in college and I’ve been using ever since.
For my brows, I have tried a lot of different products but I have to tell you Anastasia’s brow gel is amazing. I’m going to get real with you guys here: in college I found out I have a thyroid disorder that left me feeling super tired and exhausted all the time but also left me noticing my eyelashes, long hair and eyebrows were getting lighter and thinner. Around that time, I started experimenting with eyebrow shadows, pencils, waxes, you name it, I’ve tried it. What I love about Anastasia’s brow gel is that a tiny bit goes a long way! And that it lasts even through the hottest, most humid Texas summer days. Take it easy though with this gel, buy the brush they recommend and use a tiny amount to create the outline of the brow you want and then if you found you used too much outlining, you can use the extra to help fill in the brow area. If it looks too dark to you, set your brows with Laura Mercier finishing powder and that usually helps to lighten it a bit. I can’t stress enough though how much a little bit of this stuff goes such a long way.
I keep my eyes pretty simple usually with Covergirl mascara in black (just black lol). I have always bought my mascara from the drugstore as well as my day-to-day brown Maybelline eyeshadow palette that I’ve been buying since college also. I always curl my eyelashes because it help them to look longer and I like as full looking lashes as I can fake! If I’m going out on the town and looking to amp up my look, I’ll use Bare Minerals loose liner powder, but not as a liner. Instead I take a business card, envelope or tissue and use it as a guide to create a winged eyeshadow look. It sounds silly but it keeps the loose shadow from falling on my cheek and also creates a super blended line.
Drugstores and CSV are honestly some of my favorite places to try new makeup like eyeshadows and lipsticks because the cost is relatively small and the fun is well a lot of fun. Lately, I’ve been wearing a lot of Revlon’s matte lip pencils (my new favorite color is Elusive! the perfect pink) because the color lasts almost all day, doesn’t budge and is easy to apply. Sometimes I layer one of the Maybelline Whisper lipsticks on top for a pretty sheen and moisturized look or I’ll ditch the matte lip pencil if I’m running late and just swipe on the Whisper lipstick in mauve.
WOW. That was a long post. I think the reason why I do enjoy playing with makeup so much is because I feel like makeup compliments me, not the other way around. My dad always said to me growing up I was beautiful and I didn’t need makeup and I believe him. Still, I guess I can’t say I’m not a “makeup girl” after all.
